Publishers Lunch
Hachette UK has acquired Nicholas Brealey Publishing, which focuses on global business, personal and professional development, and travel writing, after which the company will become an imprint of John Murray Press. Nick Brealey will continue to manage the lists, reporting to John Murray managing director Nick Davies. All of the UK staff will move to Hachette UK's London offices, while three employees working for the US-based imprints Davies-Black and Intercultural Press -- head of Boston office Janet Crockett, sales manager Melissa Carl, and head of production Jen Delaney -- will move into Hachette Book Group's Boston office toward the end of the summer (though Hachette UK will handle sales and distribution for all of Brealey's titles.)
Hachette UK ceo Jamie Hodder-Williams said in the announcement: "Nick Brealey is a brilliant publisher....I am absolutely delighted that Nick has chosen to come to Hachette so that together we can further develop the wonderful business he has created.... Tim Hely Hutchinson always says that we look to acquire companies when the fit is right and in this case, it could not be better." Brealey added: "I am absolutely delighted that the imprints, the many titles and the whole team on both sides of the pond are all joining the distinguished and vibrant publishing house of John Murray Press. This is splendid news for everybody."
Separately, through its Abacus imprint, Hachette UK has taken over UK rights to Jonas Jonasson's The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out Of The Window And Disappearedfrom struggling independent publisher Hesperus Press, the Bookseller reports. Back in April Hesperus was ordered to stop selling Jonasson's novel (for which HBG US has world English-language rights) in the wake of litigation over Hesperus' inability to pay royalties owed on the book. Hesperus and Hachette are currently in arbitration proceedings over the matter.
